Conference Programme

2011 Opening Address
Economic Update
Dennis Turner
Dennis Turner is the Chief Economist of HSBC. His role involves advising lending bankers on economic trends not only at national level, but also on industries and regions.

Before going into the City in 1978, he worked for four years in Whitehall, for the National Economic Development Office. This was during the Labour government’s Industrial Strategy Initiative, which was an attempt to improve the performance of the UK’s manufacturing sector.

His first job on leaving university (Swansea and University College, London) was as an economist for a national trade union. Here he was responsible for the preparation of pay claims, arbitration cases and the union’s submission to various statutory bodies set up under Edward Heath’s Industrial Relations Act.

2011 After Dinner Speaker
Former Chief Executive of Ratners Jewellery
Gerald Ratner
Gerald Ratner was the millionaire chief executive of the British jewellery chain Ratners Jewellery, which he built into the world’s largest jewellery retailer business consisting of 2500 shops, making £125m, with a turnover £2billion. After some uncomplimentary remarks Gerald made at the Institute of Directors regarding product quality, the company suffered financial losses, and was renamed Signet Group in 1993. Gerald went on to relaunch his career in the jewellery sector with, geraldonline.com.

Gerald offers audiences a first hand account of the demise of his multi-million pound jewellery business and how he has managed to put this behind him and successfully re-launch his career in a highly competitive marketplace. Strong practical business messages and the execution of management strategies, combined with innovative ideas are guaranteed to show audiences how to beat the competition, delight customers and increase both sales and profits.
